Zowie’s Volunteering Story

Zowie’s volunteering story

Zowie’s journey with Make-A-Wish Canada began in 2019, when her daughter Maggie was granted a wish. Inspired by the profound impact the wish had on their family, Zowie made the decision to give back by becoming a volunteer with Make-A-Wish Canada.

Reflecting on her decision to volunteer, Zowie shares, “I saw firsthand what a wish could do for my daughter and how it spread happiness throughout our family. It was such a powerful experience that I wanted to help others have the same joy and hope. I decided to volunteer because I wanted to offer the same positive experiences, but from the perspective of a parent, supporting other wish families as they embark on their own journeys.”

Initially, Zowie contributed her time at fundraising events like the Foam Run and Rock the Park. But the more she volunteered, the more she was drawn to directly participating in the wish journey. “After a few volunteer events, I realized that my true passion was being involved in the wish process itself,” Zowie explains. “I felt more confident and transitioned into roles like Wish Discovery, Wish Granter, and Wish Revealer. So far, I’ve had the privilege of being part of about six wish experiences.”

Zowie finds great fulfillment in seeing the joy and excitement that a wish brings to children and their families. “Being a Wish Granting volunteer means being part of something truly special,” she says. “I love watching families as they share their vision of the perfect wish, and the joy that comes with revealing that wish. Even though it’s just for a short time, I feel connected to the families and share in their happiness as if it were my own.”

Zowie’s dedication has not only influenced her own volunteer work but has also inspired her daughter, Maggie, to join Make-A-Wish Canada as a volunteer. Maggie, now 22, is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biology and Psychology and will be continuing her studies in Bio-Medical Engineering next year. Despite her busy academic schedule, Maggie has found time to support the organization that made such a meaningful difference in her life.

The reward of volunteering is immeasurable, I’ve encouraged others to volunteer, and they’ve already expressed how rewarding it is to help fundraise and support the cause. Everyone who gets involved leaves with a sense of pride and positivity!

We are incredibly grateful to have Zowie and Maggie as volunteers with Make-A-Wish Canada. Their dedication and selflessness exemplify the ripple effect of a wish, creating a lasting impact not only on the families they help but also within their own community.
