Burke

I wish to go to my favourite theme park

Burke, 6

genetic disorder

Burke, affectionately known as “Burkey,” is a vibrant six-year-old living with a rare genetic disorder that affects his ability to walk, talk, and eat. Burke’s disorder is so rare, there isn’t a name for it yet. His journey has been marked by numerous challenges, including epilepsy and a gastronomy tube for feeding. Despite these hurdles, Burke’s spirit shines brightly, especially when he’s spending time with his parents, Lauren and Andrew, and his older brother, Cade.

Burke’s love for Paw Patrol, stuffed animals, music, and outdoor adventures brings him joy. His most loved activities include going for drives, taking walks, and splashing in the water during baths. His interests inspired his wish to go his favourite theme park in Florida. “The anticipation of going on the wish trip was so exciting,” recalled Lauren. “Although Burke may not have understood what was yet to come, the rest of us did and could hold the excitement for him.” The much-anticipated trip took place from May 13-20, as part of a group wish trip with 27 wish families from across Canada.

Their experience was filled with unforgettable moments, but one stood out the most for Burke: meeting a beloved film character. “Burke was able to recognize him and even tried to lean in for a hug,” Lauren said. The trip also allowed Burke to visit the ocean for the first time. “The giggles and clapping as the waves splashed us will be a cherished memory,” Lauren said.

For the family, the trip was more than just a vacation; it was a collection of precious memories that will last a lifetime. “It would be difficult to summarize something so meaningful to our family – the memories we made and the experiences we shared will be part of our hearts forever,” Lauren said. “Make-A-Wish created magic and surprise for our family which was so incredibly special.”

Hope is essential for children with critical illnesses, and its life-changing power is unlocked when wishes like Burke’s are granted. Together, we can continue to transform lives, one wish at a time.
