Jill’s Journey: A Father’s Love Through Every Step of the Way
At just 13 years old, Jillian was a student, an athlete, and—most importantly—a carefree child. Her days were filled with speed skating competitions, studying for math tests, and playing outside with friends. She lived fully in the moment, never worrying about what the future might bring.
But everything changed when Jill began feeling unwell. After weeks of uncertainty, pain, and testing, she received a life-altering diagnosis: leukemia. “My life as I knew it crumbled beneath me, and my reality shifted from living to surviving,” Jill recalls.
The years that followed were filled with unimaginable challenges. Treatments, hospital stays, and emotional hurdles became a part of her daily life. But through it all, Jill showed incredible determination and resilience, meeting each obstacle with courage and strength.
Amid her recovery, Make-A-Wish Canada granted Jill a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: an eight-day RV adventure through the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska. The trip pushed her out of her comfort zone and awakened a lifelong love for the outdoors. It also provided something just as meaningful—a chance for her family to reconnect after the emotional strain of cancer. “My mind was set free from all that had been devastating,” she says.
At the heart of Jill’s story is one steady, unwavering presence—her father. Through the darkest days and the brightest breakthroughs, Jill’s dad has been her rock. His belief in her has fueled her journey and inspired her to live boldly, no matter the challenges.
“From cheering me on from the stands of an ice rink to never losing faith in my dreams when I was battling cancer, my father has shown me nothing but love and encouragement throughout my life,” Jill shares. “I never would have gotten this far nor be where I am today without him, and I am ever so grateful.”
Today, at 18, Jill is a thriving undergraduate student at the University of Calgary. She continues to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an Olympic speed skater while also giving back as a proud member of STARboard, Make-A-Wish Canada’s youth advisory committee. In this role, Jill helps amplify the voices of young people and shape the future of the organization that once brought her hope and healing.
