I wish to give food and warm clothes to people who need it

Asia, 11

brain cancer

In 2014, Asia was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, which her doctors did not expect her to survive. The 11-year-old has endured multiple brain surgeries, three stem cell transplants and aggressive chemotherapy. Through it all, her altruistic nature emerged. Asia was always more concerned with the other kids in hospital; why they were sick and how they would get better. Today, with her cancer in remission, her doctors call her a miracle child, although she will require annual MRI’s once a year for the rest of her life.

She could have wished for something for herself, but instead Asia chose to give as the health and well-being of others is important to her. When she grows up, she wants to be a vet and intends to become a philanthropist. When she’s not at school, she collects recyclables to raise money for causes she believes in. She has previously donated money from recycling to the Hope Mission in Edmonton as she was troubled by the sight of homeless people in tents, not having proper shelter or clothing.

“She doesn’t like it when people judge others and sees everyone as significant”, said her grandfather, Darwin. “She’s a very nurturing child and has a love for all people.” Two weeks before Christmas 2023, Asia’s wish to give came true at the Hope Mission in Edmonton. She not only saw the non-profit in action but did what she could to help the vulnerable population they serve.

While she was there, she toured the facility, rode along in their community van, and met with health care workers to learn about the challenges faced by those who are homeless. She also built much-needed food hampers and connected with other youth.

Asia was excited and eager to make a positive impact in the lives of vulnerable people as well as raise awareness on how giving is far more rewarding than it is to receive
– Margorie, Asia’s grandmother

Asia doesn’t just aspire to be a philanthropist. She already is one, leading the way and inspiring others to give to those who need help. Hope is essential for children with critical illnesses, and its life-changing power is unlocked when wishes like Asia’s are granted. Together we can continue to transform lives, one wish at a time.
